The Tonga Statistics Department (TSD) has launched the 2025 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) to collect important data on the nation’s economic and social well-being.
The survey will run from January to October 2025, covering approximately 2,100 households nationwide.
The survey aims to revise Tonga’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures, rebase the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and provide policymakers with insights into income sources and spending patterns.
“This data is crucial for effective policy development and economic planning,” said the TSD. The GDP and CPI revisions will guide inflation monitoring and economic strategies, while income and expenditure data will inform targeted social programs.

A two-week training program for 31 enumerators started this week, preparing them to gather accurate data.
This year’s HIES is funded by the World Bank through the Statistical Innovation and Capacity Building for Tonga Project (SICBT) and implemented with technical support from the Pacific Community (SPC).
The HIES is part of a regional effort by Pacific nations to improve understanding of household living standards and drive sustainable development.
