Tonga experienced 77 earthquakes in December 2024, according to data released by the Tonga Geological Services. Although none of the quakes were felt by residents, the agency emphasized their importance in collecting data to prepare for potential future seismic events.
Renny Vaiomo’unga of the Tonga Geological Services told Tonga Broadcasting, “The highest magnitude recorded was 6, while the lowest was 3.”
Vaiomo’unga explained that earthquakes in Tonga are primarily caused by tectonic plate movements, with volcanic activity also contributing. Tectonic shifts in the region can trigger tsunamis, which means there is a critical need for monitoring.
Despite the lack of felt tremors, Tonga remains in a highly active seismic zone due to its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire. The continuous tracking of seismic activity provides valuable insights for emergency preparedness and tsunami warnings.
Officials urge the public to stay informed and prepared, as the region’s seismic activity poses ongoing risks. Tonga Geological Services continues to analyze data to enhance safety measures and readiness for any future events.
