King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u were formally welcomed at Fiji’s State House yesterday, marking the start of a significant State visit. The King was accorded a 100-man Guard of Honour and conferred the title of Honorary Companion of the Order of Fiji.
King Tupou VI expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for the warm welcome and ceremonial honours, saying, “I hope traditions and binding customs and common history will keep getting stronger as time progresses.”
Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, described the honour as a recognition of the King’s leadership. “The accolade bestowed on the King is a reflection of the great work that he has achieved,” he said.
He acknowledged the growing Fijian community living in Tonga and praised the King’s role in supporting both Fijian and Tongan communities. “This speaks volumes of his leadership,” the President added.
The first day of the visit concluded with a State Banquet.
Their Majesties will next travel to Lakeba, Lau, for the traditional installation of Ratu Tevita Lutunauga Kapaiwai Uluilakeba Mara as Tui Lau on Thursday.
