King Tupou VI has arrived in Lakeba for Tui Lau ceremony, rekindling ties with Fiji.
King Tupou VI, Queen Nanasipau’u, and Princess Royal Pilolevu landed on Lakeba Island today for a historic chiefly installation.
They departed Nausori Airport early Thursday, joining thousands in Tubou village to witness the investiture of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Lutunauga Mara as Tui Lau and Sau ni Vanua o Lau.
This visit marks the first time in decades that Tongan royalty has returned to the region, evoking memories of Queen Salote Tupou III’s last visit.
The ceremony will begin with a sacred service at Tubou’s Methodist Church, followed by traditional rituals. Additional flights are scheduled to bring government officials and dignitaries throughout the day.
Speaking earlier at a state reception in Suva, King Tupou VI said, “I hope that our tradition and binding, customs, and common history will keep getting stronger. Thank you very much, Mr. President.”
Fiji’s President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu welcomed the royals earlier this week, noting the shared cultural ties between the two nations.
The royal delegation is expected to return to Tonga on Saturday, following the official conclusion of their state visit.
