A magnitude‑5.0 earthquake hit near Tonga at 3.40 pm today, centred east of Tongatapu.
The Tonga Meteorological Centre reported the quake struck at a depth of 88 km, with its epicentre located about 77 km east of Tongatapu and 62 km northwest of ‘Eua. There is no tsunami threat to Tonga, authorities confirmed.
The National Tsunami Warning Centre also issued a “No Threat Advisory,” indicating the seismic event was unlikely to produce dangerous sea waves. Similarly, a recent magnitude‑6.2 quake south of Tonga in May likewise posed no tsunami risk.
Tonga lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and regularly experiences earthquakes, with several above magnitude 4 recorded this year alone. Residents are urged to monitor updates via local radio and relevant authorities.
No injuries or damage have yet been reported. Emergency services remain on standby, tracking any potential aftershocks.
