The Tonga Fire and Emergency Services (TFES) recorded 446 fire incidents in 2024, a decrease from 497 in 2023, according to Deputy Fire and Emergency Commissioner Sinamoni Kauvaka.
“There has been improvement in managing fire incidents this year, and weather played a part too,” Kauvaka told Tonga Broadcasting.
He explained that increased rainfall in 2024 helped mitigate the spread and impact of fires.
Kauvaka highlighted the importance of proactive fire prevention, particularly in residential and forest areas, to minimize future risks.
“We must pay attention to fire safety and preparedness to reduce the risk of fire incidents,” he said.
While the TFES attributes the decline to both weather conditions and improved management strategies. it reminds the public that vigilance remains critical to preventing property damage and safeguarding communities.
