Australia and Pacific Island nations’ joint bid to host COP31 in 2026 has been delayed, with a decision now expected in June 2025, following Australia’s next federal election. The announcement was made during the COP29 climate talks in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Turkey, the only other contender, has resisted calls to withdraw, prolonging the process. Australian Climate Minister Chris Bowen, who played a key role in COP29 negotiations on global climate finance, lobbied alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, but no agreement was reached.
A statement from the Australian delegation emphasized the bid’s significance, stating, “The partnership with Pacific Island nations underscores the need for moral authority in tackling the climate crisis.”
If successful, the summit is expected to attract tens of thousands of participants, driving momentum for Australia’s transition to clean energy. However, concerns linger over Australia’s fossil fuel exports, which remain a contentious issue among Pacific allies.
