A new subsea cable system, Australia Connect, has been unveiled by Google Cloud and its partners, set to enhance internet security and data capacity across Australia and the Pacific.
The initiative includes the Bosun subsea cable, linking Darwin to Christmas Island with onward connections to Singapore, and a new interlink cable between Melbourne, Perth, and Christmas Island. In Melbourne, it will connect to the existing Honomoana cable system, forming a new point of connection for the U.S. and Asia.
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland praised the project’s potential, stating, “New and diversified routes support secure and reliable infrastructure in Australia and the Pacific.”
The project, backed by NEXTDC, Subco, Vocus, and local governments, aims to bolster Australia’s position as a stable gateway between Asia and the U.S., improving data speeds, cybersecurity, and system redundancy across the region.
