Australia secured an 18-0 victory over Tonga in a tense opening match of the Pacific Championships at Suncorp Stadium last night, avoiding back-to-back Test losses.
With 33,000 fans cheering in support, Tonga aimed to replicate their famous 2019 win against the Kangaroos but struggled to find their rhythm as the Kangaroos who took control early.
Despite dominating possession, Tonga struggled offensively. Tom Trbojevic intercepted a pass and sprinted 70 meters for the opening try, giving Australia a 6-0 lead at halftime. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow extended the lead after 51 minutes with a trademark try, while Tonga’s Keaon Koloamatangi had a try disallowed for a fumble.
Tongan halfback Isaiya Katoa’s multiple kicking errors hampered Tonga’s chances, and Lehi Hopoate was sin-binned for an offside tackle. Zac Lomax added a penalty, solidifying Australia’s lead before Tom Dearden capped the match with a late try in the final minute.
The Kangaroos now prepare to face the Kiwis next week aiming for a spot in the Cup final, while Tonga must win to avoid relegation.
