Australia is set to host the 2024 Pacific Labour Mobility Annual Meeting (PLMAM) from 11-14 November in Brisbane.
The event, organized under the PACER Plus Arrangement on Labour Mobility, is regarded as the leading forum for labour mobility issues in the Pacific.
With nearly 400 attendees expected, including government representatives, employers, unions, and civil society organizations, PLMAM 2024 will focus on the theme “Collectively Building Resilience.” This year’s theme highlights the need for regional collaboration to strengthen labour mobility frameworks in response to current challenges.
“Pacific labour mobility has evolved significantly since the inception of the New Zealand Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme in 2007 and the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme in 2012,” said Mr. Roy Lagolago, Head of the PACER Plus Implementation Unit.
He highlighted that, “In this rapidly changing era, the challenge for the Pacific is to continuously build resilience, and we recognize that successfully building resilience requires a cooperative effort by all involved.”
Discussions at the event will cover critical issues, including worker wellbeing, skills development, and social security, aiming to develop resilience and mutual benefit for all stakeholders in the region’s labour mobility initiatives.
