A 33-year old woman from Vava’u drowned at Hopohiva Beach, Ha’ateiho on Saturday evening, police confirm.
Police were alerted at about 6 pm after the body of a woman was discovered floating at Hopohiva Beach in Ha’ateiho. Deputy Police Commissioner Tevita Vailea told the Tonga Broadcasting Commission officers confirmed the drowning “around 6 pm on Saturday after receiving a report.”
Vailea said the victim had been among a group visiting the beach and that the group had been drinking alcohol too. She entered the water to swim but the group only noticed her body later floating in the water. Rescue efforts could not revive her.
The victim who is from Vava’u was living in Tofoa.
Police have launched an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning, including the consumption of alcohol and safety precautions taken by the group.
Local authorities urge beachgoers to exercise caution around water, especially when alcohol is involved.
