A new Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) as its new Border Management Information System (BMIS) was launched by Government last Saturday in an effort to modernise the country’s approach to border security.
This advanced platform, developed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and funded by the IOM Development Fund and the Government of Japan, provides real-time monitoring of cross-border movement, enhancing the detection of security risks, including human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
At the official handover event yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Samiu Vaipulu expressed Tonga’s commitment to advancing national security interests.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its stakeholders are fully committed to executing the MIDAS project, enhancing our national interests in border security and the efficient movement of people,” he said.
Intra-regional support from Vanuatu, which adopted MIDAS earlier this year, contributed to the successful deployment, with Vanuatu officials joining IOM to train Tongan immigration officers.
“We congratulate Tonga on this significant achievement and remain committed to ongoing support,” said Solomon Kantha, IOM’s Chief of Mission in Fiji.
