This week, 25 women from Tonga’s fisheries sector took part in a hands-on workshop aimed at boosting their business, budgeting, and cooking skills.
Held from March 5-7 in Nuku’alofa, the Gender Equity, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Workshop on Marketing, Budgeting, and Cooking was organised by the Tonga Ministry for Fisheries in partnership with the Pacific Community (SPC).

The women, many of whom rely on fisheries for their livelihoods, learned practical marketing strategies, financial management techniques, and nutrition-focused cooking skills.
“This workshop is not just about fisheries; it is also about the continuous support for women who are doing important work in the fisheries sector,” said Deputy CEO of the Ministry of Fisheries, Ms. Elaine Havealeta.
At the workshop’s opening, SPC’s Regional Director for Polynesia, Ms. Elsie Fukofuka, emphasised the importance of accelerating action to break barriers and promote inclusive participation in fisheries.
Participants engaged in interactive sessions, sharing experiences and learning new ways to promote and sustain their businesses. Cooking demonstrations also encouraged healthier and more inclusive food practices.
The workshop, part of International Women’s Day celebrations, was a major step in empowering women in Tonga’s fisheries sector. By equipping them with essential skills, the initiative supports their economic independence and strengthens their role in the industry.
