China’s ambassador to Tonga has pledged support for women’s leadership during a cultural exchange with young Tongan women.
Over 50 participants from the She Leads Fale Alea 2025 program gathered at the Chinese Embassy in Nukuʻalofa this week for a talanoa dialogue session. The event included Tongan youth leaders, Chinese educators, and embassy staff.

Ambassador Liu Weimin addressed the gathering, highlighting the upcoming Global Women’s Summit in China and reaffirming his country’s commitment to gender equality. “China stands ready to work with Tonga to promote the shared progress of the women’s cause in our two countries through concrete actions,” he said.
The ambassador noted that 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, a milestone in global efforts to advance women’s rights. He emphasised China’s progress in this area and its intention to elevate the global women’s agenda through the forthcoming summit.
She Leads Fale Alea, organised by Take The Lead in partnership with Tonga’s Legislative Assembly, provides young women aged 16–29 with parliamentary experience and leadership training.

This year’s program, themed “Sustainability & Resilience,” runs from 22 to 29 April, focusing on equipping participants to navigate leadership roles while balancing tradition and progress.
Participants praised China’s achievements in advancing women’s rights and expressed appreciation for the embassy’s support. The event fostered a warm and friendly atmosphere, receiving widespread acclaim.

The talanoa reflects the deepening ties between China and Tonga, with both nations committed to empowering women and strengthening bilateral relations.
