The hand-over ceremony for 12 police vehicles donated by China to the Tonga Police was held at the Fa’onelua Convention Center on Wednesday. The vehicles, donated by China’s Ministry of Public Security, included four shuttle buses and eight double-decker vehicles.
The Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, Liu Weimin, said that this donation demonstrated China’s commitment to supporting Tonga’s law enforcement capacity. “It is a testament of our commitment to strengthen the bilateral ties,” he said.
Ambassador Weimin also said that China’s cooperation with Tonga is “open and inclusive,” and that China is willing to collaborate with other Pacific Island countries to develop professional law enforcement teams, ensuring security and regional development.
The Minister of MEIDECC, Hon. Fekita ’Utoikamanu conveyed Tonga’s gratitude for China’s continued support, particularly during the recent 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting. She acknowledged the donation to boost Tonga Police’s capacity and their ability to provide effective services. “This generous contribution aligns perfectly with Tonga’s national development priorities, strengthening our police force to ensure the safety and security of our citizens,” she said.
Hon. Utoikamanu also said that the partnership between China and Tonga is important for the nation’s future prosperity and security, and expressed optimism about future collaboration. Also attending the event were Chief Secretary Paula Ma’u, Police Commissioner Shane Mclennan, and senior government officials.
