Li Jianping, a former senior official in Inner Mongolia, was executed on Tuesday in the largest corruption case in China’s history. Jianping was convicted of embezzling over three billion yuan (approximately $421 million).
The execution, ordered by the Supreme People’s Court, was carried out in Inner Mongolia, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency. Jianping, 64, previously served as the secretary of the Communist Party’s Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone working committee. His death sentence, issued in September 2022, was upheld on appeal in August 2024.
President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign, launched in 2012, has punished over a million officials, including senior military leaders. In January, Xi urged officials to combat corruption and warned against interest groups undermining the Communist Party.
Despite efforts, corruption among high-ranking officials persists. The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection investigated 54 senior officials this year, compared to 45 last year.
