Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, Liu Weimin, marked the 2025 Chinese New Year by distributing “Spring Festival Gift Packages” to local Chinese community members last week.
During visits to Chinese-owned shops and a gathering at the embassy, Ambassador Liu extended warm holiday greetings and commended the community’s resilience and unity.
He thanked them for their contributions to China-Tonga relations including opposing “Taiwan independence” and promoting reunification.
Liu also reiterated the embassy’s commitment to supporting their well-being.
“The Chinese Embassy serves as a home for all Chinese nationals in Tonga,” Liu said, pledging to address the community’s concerns and provide practical assistance.

The gift packages, symbolizing care and blessings from the Chinese government, were warmly received.
Chinese New Year will be celebrated worldwide on January 29 and expected to last for 2 weeks. This year welcomes the Year of the Snake, representing adaptability and resourcefulness.
Members of the Chinese community mourned the death of a member during the fire which destroyed the Joe’s Kahana Resort & Restaurant, a Chinese-owned business, on Sunday.
