The Chinese Medical Team, stationed in Tonga since July, expanded its services to Vava’u this week, offering free healthcare at Ngū Hospital from 20 to 29 November.
The initiative coincides with the first visit to Vava’u by H.E. Ambassador Liu Weimin, who toured various China-aided projects alongside Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Samiu Vaipulu and other officials.
The team, comprising six doctors with over a decade of expertise in various specialties, has already provided critical services at Vaiola Hospital on Tongatapu. Their offerings include advanced diagnostics, mental health consultations, orthopedic and gynecological surgeries, acupuncture, and non-invasive medical procedures.
“We were sent here to help the Tongan people, to supply better medical services that aren’t available here,” said team leader and pathologist Dr. Lu Qingyang in an interview with Matangi Tonga, who reported over 100 cases handled in four months.

Dr. Lu highlighted their commitment to leaving a lasting impact, saying, “When we go back, I hope that we leave behind some knowledge and skills that will help the people.”
Ambassador Liu praised the medical mission during his visit, reiterating China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Vava’u in health, agriculture, and tourism.
