The 5th Chinese Medical Team has started a medical outreach program at Ha’apai Hospital, running from May 31 to June 9.
This marks the team’s first visit to Ha’apai since their arrival in Tonga in July 2024. The six-member team comprises specialists in orthopaedics, gynaecology, ultrasound, pathology, anaesthesiology, and psychiatry. Residents are encouraged to attend the hospital for consultations during this period.
The initiative follows successful missions to Vava’u in November 2024, where six surgeries were performed at Prince Ngu Hospital, and to ‘Eua in May 2025, providing free healthcare services to local communities. The team’s efforts are part of China’s ongoing commitment to support Tonga’s healthcare system.
Early this year, China donated over 100 boxes of medical supplies to the Ministry of Health, including equipment for gynaecology, orthopaedics, anaesthesia, and pathology . A financial contribution of $57,244 pa’anga was also made toward dengue fever prevention efforts.
The Chinese Medical Team’s presence in Tonga highlights the strengthening ties between the two nations, with ongoing collaborations aimed at enhancing medical services and public health outcomes across the islands.
