The Fiji Labour Party is calling for the appointment of a Commission of Experts to look into the growing incidence of corruption in Fiji, both in the public and private sectors.
This was passed as a resolution at its national council meeting in Nadi yesterday.
Text of the resolution posted on the FLP social media page states an inquiry is imperative given the extremely unsatisfactory state of the oversight institutions and the massive sums of public monies lost to corruption.
“There are also cases of alleged improper practices in the award of government contracts, including the statutory bodies, municipal councils and government commercial companies.
“Appointments to Boards of these companies and statutory organisations are based largely on political patronage and shared between the nominees of the political parties in the Coalition,” it said.
The FLP resolution adds an inquiry must make recommendations to strengthen the laws to curb corrupt practices, improve the institutional capacity and expertise of the relevant State organs entrusted with this responsibility and look into any other matter it considers appropriate to curb the current extent of corruption in the country.
