HRH Crown Prince Tupouto‘a ‘Ulukalala has led a delegation to China, reinforcing the nation’s strategic partnership with Beijing.
The Crown Prince, who serves as Tonga’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for His Majesty’s Armed Forces, is visiting Shandong Province ahead of the Third China–Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Xiamen, Fujian Province, scheduled for May 28–29. He is accompanied by the Governor of Vava’u, Lord Fakatulolo.

On May 26, the delegation toured Zhongtong Bus Holding Co., Ltd. in Liaocheng city, a global leader in new-energy vehicles. The upcoming summit in Xiamen, chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, will bring together leaders from 11 Pacific nations to discuss development, climate action, and regional security. Tonga’s participation highlights its ongoing collaboration with China in areas such as infrastructure, health, and disaster resilience.
In recent years, China has funded key projects in Tonga, including road upgrades and public buildings, strengthening bilateral relations. The visit to Zhongtong Bus Holding Co. reflects Tonga’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and adopting sustainable technologies.
As the Pacific region navigates shifting geopolitical dynamics, Tonga’s engagement with China signifies its intent to maintain strong international partnerships and contribute to regional development initiatives.
