Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala has praised China’s approach to diplomacy, highlighting mutual respect and tangible cooperation.
In a recent interview with CGTN during the China–Pacific Islands Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Xiamen, the Crown Prince, who also serves as Tonga’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, expressed appreciation for China’s recognition of Tonga as an equal partner despite its small size.
“We understand how much China values us. And despite being a very small country, we appreciate your China’s willingness to make us equal among all states,” he said.
He highlighted ongoing health and education collaborations, including the exchange of doctors and teachers, and the provision of scholarships. “This is our most valuable service in health and education,” he noted, commending China’s sustained support even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Looking ahead, the Crown Prince emphasised renewable energy as a national priority, aiming for 70% renewable energy by 2030. “Renewable energy is our priority. China helps us with a lot of green energy projects,” he stated, highlighting the importance of climate action cooperation.
China has pledged increased support to Pacific Island nations, including Tonga, in addressing climate change. At the Xiamen summit, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced plans for 100 “small but beautiful” projects over the next three years and a $2 million investment in clean energy and other sectors.
Tonga and China have maintained diplomatic relations for over 26 years, marked by mutual respect and support. In February, Chinese Ambassador Liu Weimin met with the Crown Prince, reaffirming the strong bilateral ties and exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation in various fields.
The Crown Prince’s remarks reflect Tonga’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with China, focusing on sustainable development, cultural preservation, and resilience against climate challenges.
