Cruise ships are making a significant comeback in Tonga, bringing economic benefits to local communities while reviving the Pacific’s tourism industry.
Last year, Tonga surpassed its pre-pandemic cruise visitor numbers, with over 25,000 tourists arriving by sea. While Nukuʻalofa remains the main destination, the Tonga Tourism Authority is keen to extend benefits to remote islands like Haʻapai, Niua, and ʻEua.
“All individual islands are unique and they have their own stories and history, which is something we’d also like to market,” said Tonga Tourism CEO Viliami Takau.
For local artisans like Amelia Taufapasa, the return of cruise ships has been a lifeline. “Cruise ships bring in more money to Tonga not only for me but also my fellow handicraft friends,” she said.
The Pacific’s unspoiled landscapes and cultural experiences position it well for boutique and expedition cruises, offering sustainable growth opportunities for smaller, less accessible destinations.
