A 21‑year‑old woman is charged after video shows reckless minibus circling a roundabout.
Tonga Police arrested a female driver from Kahoua on 13 June, accusing her of dangerous driving filmed at the Taufa‘ahau/Bypass roundabout on 12 June. The footage shows a minibus completing multiple circuits with passengers cheering her on.
Police say the woman will appear in Nuku‘alofa court on Wednesday 2 July. Police reminded the public that “reckless driving endangers lives and will not be tolerated,” emphasising that road safety remains their “highest priority”.
Social media users widely shared the video, prompting rapid police response. Authorities launched an investigation immediately and verified the vehicle and driver before making an arrest in under 48 hours.
This incident follows growing concern over risky driving behaviour in Tonga. Earlier this year, a 24‑year‑old from Havelu appeared in court for reckless driving and alcohol‑related injuries, while authorities in early 2025 prosecuted a fatal crash in Nakolo caused by dangerous driving.
Police say more patrols and stricter action will follow. The next court hearing on 2 July will determine further charges and potential penalties.
