Former Leeds Rhinos winger David Fusitu’a is reportedly exploring a switch to rugby union, with Japan emerging as a potential destination.
The 30-year-old Auckland-born star, who has represented both the Kiwis and Tonga in Test rugby, has been without a club since leaving Leeds at the end of 2024.
Fusitu’a joined the Rhinos in 2022, scoring 18 tries in 43 appearances, but his stint in the Super League was plagued by injuries. Knee problems and a damaged toe kept him off the field for significant periods, including a missed farewell game last year.
Despite these setbacks, Fusitu’a’s strong ball-carrying ability and finishing power earned him recognition as a formidable player. His achievements include a stellar eight-season run with the New Zealand Warriors, where he scored 61 tries in 108 NRL games and was the competition’s top try-scorer in 2018.
Japan’s Rugby League One, which features 12 top-flight clubs, has attracted several high-profile players, including former New Zealand international Joey Manu. If Fusitu’a makes the switch, his size and skills could make an immediate impact.
