Tongan athletes received a boost from Olympic champion Dame Valerie Adams, who co-facilitated a wellbeing and leadership workshop last week aimed at shaping the future of sport in Tonga.
She emphasized the importance of dedication and not taking shortcuts in achieving success.
“We must cultivate the courage and empowerment needed to initiate meaningful change,” Adams said after assisting in the establishment of Tonga’s Athletes Commission.
Adams, reflecting on her own journey, shared a powerful message with the 42 participants, saying, “It took 10 years of hard work to win my first Gold medal.”

She emphasized the importance of commitment from everyone, saying, “It all comes down to the people; if they aren’t fully dedicated or motivated for the right reasons, progress will be challenging.”
Tonga Sports Association & National Olympic Committee (TASA) praised the workshop’s impact, noting, “Athletes appreciate being seen, heard, and valued.”
The workshop was made possible through partnerships with Olympic Solidarity, ONOC, and the Australian High Commission.
