The China-Tonga Agro-Tech Project Demonstration Complex is showcasing impressive advancements in sustainable agriculture.
The complex features lively pigs and fresh mushrooms, reflecting the project’s success in livestock breeding and mushroom cultivation. The initiative aims to enhance food security and promote sustainable farming practices in Tonga.

Chinese agricultural experts are sharing their experiences and techniques to help Tongan farmers increase household incomes.
Last year, Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, Liu Weimin, met with Tonga’s Minister for Agriculture, Food, and Forests, Lord Fohe, to discuss the launch of Phase VII of the China-aid Agro-Tech Cooperation Project.
Ambassador Liu emphasized China’s commitment to Tonga’s health and food security, noting that since 2009, six Agro-Tech Cooperation projects have yielded significant results. He said, “The Agro-Tech Cooperation project has now become a brand name of China-aid projects.”
By introducing advanced agricultural technologies, the project seeks to improve productivity and resilience against climate challenges. The project is part of China’s broader efforts to support agricultural development in Pacific Island countries.

In a related development, on February 18, 2025, Ambassador Liu and Tonga’s Minister for Agriculture, Food, and Forests, Dr. Siosiua Halavatau, attended a handover ceremony for agricultural supplies.
The equipment, including laboratory tools and machinery, is expected to boost Tonga’s agricultural modernization efforts. Dr. Halavatau expressed gratitude for China’s assistance, believing it would inject new momentum into Tonga’s agricultural sector.
The Agro-Tech Project Demonstration Complex serves as a model for future agricultural initiatives in the region.
