The Ministry of Health has reported 13 new dengue fever cases, bringing the total to 837 amid an ongoing nationwide outbreak.
The latest Ministry of Health situation report as of yesterday confirms three people remain hospitalised in stable condition. A total of three dengue-related deaths have been recorded to date.
Most cases are concentrated in Tongatapu (455), followed by Vavaʻu (312), ʻEua (66), and Haʻapai (4). The virus, identified as Dengue Virus Type 2 (DENV-2), is predominantly affecting youths aged 10 to 19, with the youngest case being a 2-month-old baby.
Health authorities are continuing vector control operations in high-risk zones and urge the public to destroy mosquito breeding sites at homes and schools. Tyres and standing water should be cleared weekly.
People are being advised to wear long clothing and use repellents. While many dengue cases are mild, the Ministry warns: “Seek immediate medical attention if you or someone has severe abdominal pain, bleeding gums, vomiting blood, rapid breathing, or fatigue.”
