A seven-month-old infant and a 19-year-old have died from dengue fever at Vaiola Hospital last week, the Ministry of Health confirmed.
These are the first fatalities linked to the dengue outbreak declared on 19 February 2025. The Ministry has not released further details about the victims.
As of 29 April, the Ministry reported a total of 588 confirmed dengue cases, with six new infections and eight hospitalisations. The outbreak has primarily affected the islands of Vava’u, Tongatapu, and ‘Eua, with the 10–19 age group being the most impacted.
Health authorities have activated the Public Health Emergency Operation Center and are conducting vector control measures, including spraying affected households and neighbouring areas. Community outreach and health awareness campaigns are ongoing to educate the public on dengue prevention and symptoms.
The Ministry urges residents to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, use insect repellent, and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, or joint pain.
