Rev. Dr. Nasili Vaka’uta, a trailblazing scholar and transformative leader, has been named Professor of Biblical Studies at Trinity Methodist Theological College.
The announcement, made during the College’s 180th-anniversary celebrations earlier this month, marks a historic milestone as the institution awarded its first-ever professorial titles.
Dr. Vaka’uta has been the Principal of Trinity College since 2015 and is recognized for his transformative leadership and innovative scholarship. His work integrates Pasifika traditions, postcolonial hermeneutics, and Indigenous epistemologies, reshaping theological education in Aotearoa.
His publications, including “Reading Ezra 9-10 Tu’a-wise” and “Theology as Thresholds: Invitations from Aotearoa New Zealand”, have challenged conventional biblical interpretations. Dr. Vaka’uta’s work highlights Oceania’s contributions to global theological discourse, setting a benchmark for scholarly excellence.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Vaka’uta has spearheaded initiatives addressing community needs. He secured a $1.2 million grant for The Lotu Factor project, which examines the intersections of religiosity, well-being, and Tongan identity in New Zealand.
Dr. Vaka’uta has also been a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion. His leadership in the “Que[e]rying Lotu” project reflects his commitment to advancing gender and sexual diversity in theological education.
The professorial promotion, following a rigorous evaluation, marks a new chapter for Trinity College. “These appointments signify a new era of academic excellence and leadership at Trinity College,” Trinity College said in a statement.
