Newly-appointed Prime Minister Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke delivered his inaugural public speech yesterday afternoon, live-streamed from the Prime Minister’s office, offering updates on the government and outlining his immediate plans.
Eke began by congratulating King Tupou VI and reflecting on the significance of his appointment. “‘I’m but a commoner, but my duty is of a high calling,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to serving in line with the King’s wishes and the constitution.
Eke also expressed gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament and MPs for their role in his appointment, promising to prioritize the people’s needs.
In his address, Eke confirmed that the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. Samiu Vaipulu, had stepped down, with Eke now assuming full responsibility.
He reassured the public that the current government is functioning well and that he is working closely with caretaker Ministers until his new Cabinet is finalized. He announced that the Cabinet lineup is likely to be revealed by next Friday.
Acknowledging the challenges of uniting his diverse political team of independently elected MPs and noble representatives, Eke called for public support and prayers during this transition. “Let us draw strength from the national prayer week as we move forward,” he said.
Further details on his government’s plans will follow once his Cabinet is in place.
