Prime Minister ‘Aisake Eke has committed to prudent public spending, focusing on critical areas during his tenure.
“We are committed to be more wise in public spending and to protect people’s lives and property,” Eke said in his first press conference last Thursday.
Emphasizing mutual responsibility, he added, “But we also want people to pay their taxes. It’s a two-way commitment.”
Eke’s administration aims to govern ‘according to the law’, prioritizing the well-being of the people. “Our actions will alleviate key things which our people are suffering from,” he assured.
Eke highlighted the Fanga’uta Lagoon Bridge and fisheries development in his opening statement to the media.
To ease traffic congestion and ensure timely arrivals at work and school, the government plans to expedite the construction of the Fanga’uta Lagoon Bridge. This project aims to link the capital to Folaha, enhancing connectivity and improving daily commutes for residents from eastern and central Tongatapu.
Addressing high fish prices, Eke said, “God has given us the ocean and there is a lot of potential there.” The government intends to acquire more fishing boats to increase supply and reduce costs.
Recognizing the roles of both the government and private sector, Eke added, “We have a mixed economy which allows us to work together.”
Following the first cabinet meeting, subcommittees were formed to focus on key government actions. Cabinet ministers are visiting their ministries to understand current situations and priorities, enabling prompt government action.
Eke, who previously served as finance minister from 2014 to 2017, was elected prime minister by parliament on December 24, 2024, following the Siaosi Sovaleni’s resignation amid a power struggle with King Tupou VI.
