The Tonga Renewable Energy Project (TREP) has brought electricity to every home on ‘O’ua Island, Ha’apai—including all households led by women.
In May 2025, a final review team visited the island. They found that 37 households are now connected to solar power. The system includes 62.2 kilowatts of solar energy and battery storage for night use.

‘O’ua families, especially sea-urchin harvesters like the Taufa and Latu families, say the power helps them store their seafood. “We sell buckets for up to $2,000,” said Silia Taufa. “The money helps our families with food, bills, and school.”
Electricity poles now reach the wharf, where streetlights help night fishermen and returning boats. Freezers near the wharf let harvesters store goods without walking up the hill.
For women like Tina Uasi, power brings daily comfort. “The washing machine is a big help,” she said. She also enjoys karaoke during her breaks—something not possible before.
Local leaders say the solar power system is working well. More homes now have their own freezers. A request has been made to connect the new church before the project ends in June 2025.
This project helps families, supports local business, and brings comfort to daily life on O’ua.
