The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) has issued a Tropical Cyclone Alert for the northern islands of Niuafo‘ou and Niuatoputapu, urging residents to take immediate precautions as Tropical Disturbance 09F is expected to impact the area within 24 to 48 hours.
The NDRMO warns of heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and flash flooding in low-lying coastal areas. Residents are advised to prepare for the storm by securing homes, reinforcing structures, and clearing drainage systems.
It is also recommended to prepare a 72-hour emergency kit with food, water, medicine, and essential supplies.
“Stay informed and follow updates from NDRMO and Tonga Meteorological Services,” the NDRMO said. “Know your evacuation center and be ready to move if necessary.”

The system, currently located about 400 km north-northwest of Niuafo‘ou, is expected to bring gale-force winds ranging from 68 to 94 km/h to the region.
While the storm has a low chance of becoming a full-fledged tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours, the NDRMO advises everyone to stay alert and prioritize safety.
Fishermen and small boat operators are urged to stay ashore and avoid rough seas as conditions worsen.
