European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly announced reciprocal tariffs, warning of severe consequences for the global economy.
“President Trump’s announcement of universal tariffs on the whole world, including the European Union, is a major blow to the world economy. I deeply regret this choice,” von der Leyen said at a news conference early Thursday.
The U.S. has imposed sweeping tariffs, including a 20% levy on European goods, escalating tensions between Washington and Brussels. Von der Leyen warned that these measures would lead to rising inflation, supply chain disruptions, and financial uncertainty for millions.
“The global economy will massively suffer. Uncertainty will spiral and trigger the rise of further protectionism. The consequences will be dire for millions of people around the globe,” she stated.
While acknowledging flaws in the current global trading system, von der Leyen rejected tariffs as a solution. She reiterated the EU’s willingness to negotiate but warned that Brussels is prepared to respond if necessary.
“We are already finalizing the first package of countermeasures in response to tariffs on steel,” she said, signaling that the EU is ready to fight back.
