From 26 to 28 August, International Partnerships Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen will represent the European Union (EU) at the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Tonga, where she will discuss the Pacific Protocol of the Samoa Agreement. This protocol serves as a framework for the EU’s partnership with the 79 countries of the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), aiming to enhance cooperation in promoting a sustainable ocean-based economy, environmental protection, and climate resilience in the region.
During her visit, Commissioner Urpilainen will hold bilateral meetings with high-level representatives from partner countries and other development partners to outline cooperation priorities. These discussions will focus on how the EU’s Global Gateway investment strategy can support sustainable growth in the Pacific region. The strategy is designed to mobilise significant investments in infrastructure, green energy, and digital transformation, aligning with the EU’s commitment to fostering resilient and sustainable development globally.
In addition to diplomatic engagements, Commissioner Urpilainen will visit the EU-funded Climate and WASH Resilience Community Project, a key initiative aimed at helping vulnerable households better prepare for and respond to climate-related risks. The project shows the EU’s dedication to addressing climate challenges at the grassroots level, particularly in regions most impacted by environmental changes.
The Commissioner’s visit will also include interactions with local youth and civil society groups, highlighting the EU’s commitment to inclusive and participatory development processes. Several announcements are expected during her visit, further reinforcing the EU’s support for a resilient and sustainable future for Pacific communities.
