Queensland-based Wallaroo Eva Karpani has joined the Reds women’s program for their historic visit to Tonga this week. The 26-Test prop’s presence for Friday’s clash against Tonga’s national women’s team, Lofa, is a big boost, enhancing the Reds’ set piece and adding valuable experience.
Karpani, who is of Tongan heritage, previously played for the NSW Waratahs during their Buildcorp Super Rugby Women’s title run. She was a Reds player in 2023 and currently represents Bond University on the Gold Coast. This tour has personal significance for her, as she will be returning to her roots. During the ARU University Women’s Sevens in 2018, she was dubbed a female ‘Jonah Lomu‘ for her speed and strength.
Earlier this year, Eva Karpani was named Wallaroos Player of the Year following a standout season. The tighthead prop scored three tries in Australia’s win over France and added a spectacular solo try against Wales in the WXV 1 tournament. She started all eight Tests in 2023 and ranked among the top five for carries during WXV 1.
“I’d love to change the image of a tighthead prop that we can be versatile and agile, not just a powerful ball runner,” she said in her speech during the award.
Nico Andrade, Queensland Reds Women’s High Performance Manager, highlighted the value of this tour: “It’s exciting to bring fresh talent into the program. Playing a game against a national side at this time of year is really valuable for our preparations for the 2025 season.”
The 25-player squad includes 10 new faces and is supported by Australia’s PacificAus Sports program, aiming to strengthen Pacific rugby through international exposure.
The men’s match follows the Reds’ game against Wales on July 19. This will be the Reds women’s first overseas match in their 28-year history.
