Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, faced significant outages on Wednesday afternoon, disrupting access for thousands of users.
Outage reports surged on DownDetector around 12:30 p.m. EST, with Facebook receiving over 100,000 complaints by 1:10 p.m. EST. Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads experienced similar spikes in user-reported issues.
By 2 p.m. EST, reports had begun to decline, with Facebook outages dropping to about 28,000. Access to Instagram and WhatsApp also showed signs of recovery.
Affected users encountered error messages on Facebook stating, “We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.” Meta’s service status page confirmed “major disruptions” across key business tools, including Ads Manager and Messenger API services.
In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, Meta acknowledged the problem: “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
This big outage follows another large Meta outage from March that took down Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Meta also saw a major outage affecting Instagram and Facebook in October 2022.
Further updates are expected.
