The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Forests (MAFF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) today announced the hand over of equipment at the MAFF Extension and Women Development Division in Vaololoa for two key projects in Tonga. This includes an incinerator for the One Health Project and electronic equipment for the Digital Village Initiative.
“We are thrilled to receive this essential equipment from FAO. This support will undoubtedly empower our communities, particularly women, and enhance our resilience and sustainability,” said Ms. Kalati Hafoka, Acting CEO of MAFF.
The One Health Project aims to integrate human, animal, and environmental health for comprehensive health outcomes, with the new incinerator set to improve waste management, particularly for biomedical and agricultural waste.
The Digital Village Initiative focuses on fostering innovation in Tonga’s agrifood systems with an emphasis on gender sensitivity. The equipment handed over includes screen house nets, water tanks, laptops, and other digital tools. This initiative aims to boost agricultural productivity, promote digital literacy, and ensure gender inclusion in agrifood systems.
“This handover symbolises our commitment to supporting Tonga in its journey towards sustainable agricultural development and improved public health,” said Joseph Nyemah, Food & Nutrition Officer at FAO.
Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Samiu Kuita Vaipulu thanked FAO and encouraged women groups to use the equipment to establish sustainable backyard gardens, promoting healthy eating and potential agri-business opportunities.
