A tragic car accident on Hala Hihifo in Hofoa claimed the lives of two children on January 22, Tonga Police confirmed.
The driver, a 37-year-old father from Sia’atoutai, has been charged with reckless driving causing death.
Police said the driver was traveling eastbound with his family when he tried to overtake two vehicles. This maneuver caused the car to lose control, swerve, and flip.
His two children, a 13-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, were pronounced dead upon arrival at Vaiola Hospital due to severe head injuries.

Two other passengers in the vehicle were reported to be in satisfactory condition, while the driver sustained minor injuries.
He is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
“This marks the third fatality on Tonga’s roads this year,” Tonga Police said in a statement. “Reckless driving endangers lives. Drive responsibly at all times, particularly when children are passengers.”
