Fiji’s Minister for Health, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, unveiled the Fiji Health Adaptation Plan (FHAP) 2024–2030 at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The plan, one of the first in the Pacific, aligns with Fiji’s National Adaptation Plan 2019–2024 and aims to address climate change’s impact on health. “This represents a vital step for Fiji to address the impact of climate change on health,” Dr. Lalabalavu said.
Building on the Climate Change and Health Strategic Action Plan 2016–2022, FHAP integrates health into national climate strategies, focusing on resilience in health systems and communities.
WHO Regional Director Dr. Saia Piukala praised Fiji’s leadership in climate-health actions, urging other Pacific nations to adopt similar initiatives.
Supported by WHO and KOICA, the plan targets 20 healthcare facilities for flood-resistant upgrades and improved water systems. “These measures ensure clean water access during disasters,” Dr. Lalabalavu stated.
