A prominent human rights coalition has criticized Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, urging him to halt the “reckless expansion” of his government and refocus on pressing national issues.
The NGO Coalition on Human Rights (NGOCHR) expressed outrage over Rabuka’s abrupt reshuffling of ministerial portfolios and the addition of new ministers and assistant ministers. “This move raises serious questions about transparency, accountability, and the stability of governance in Fiji,” the NGOCHR said in a statement.
The coalition warned that these changes could strain Fiji’s already burdened finances. “With the country’s national debt exceeding $10 billion, this reshuffle is not just ill-timed — it is financially irresponsible,” the statement said.
Criticism also focused on the lack of transparency regarding funding for the additional government posts. “Increasing operational costs in the face of economic fragility is a slap in the face to the hardworking people of Fiji,” the coalition added, calling the move a “betrayal of public trust.”
RNZ Pacific reported Rabuka’s recruitment of six opposition members into his People’s Alliance ranks, potentially sidelining his coalition partners.
The NGOCHR demanded an end to what it described as “political manoeuvres disguised as governance,” calling for leadership that prioritizes the Fijian people over political survival.
