Fiji has called for increased access to renewable energy financing, emphasizing the need for investment in solar energy projects and solar water pumps in rural areas, including schools and health centers.
Minister for Public Works and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, represented Fiji at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025 and the 15th International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) General Assembly in Abu Dhabi.
He highlighted the importance of amplifying the voice of Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in international forums, noting the severe threats posed by climate change, such as rising sea levels and increased frequency of cyclones and floods.
In a bilateral meeting with IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera, Tuisawau reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the agency’s work in supporting member countries to achieve energy transition targets.
Both parties agreed to collaborate further through financing platforms available via IRENA, including the Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF), the Climate Investment Platform (CIP), and the Small Island Developing States Lighthouses Initiative.
