A 58-year-old Fijian man has been charged with human trafficking and is currently in police custody, according to Deputy Police Commissioner Tevita Vailea. The accused, as reported earlier, was arrested last Friday following an investigation into the trafficking of a 36-year-old Fijian woman living in Tonga.
Vailea said that the investigation, conducted in collaboration with Tonga’s Technical Working Group and law enforcement agencies from other Pacific island nations, uncovered the use of unspecified technologies by the accused to lure victims, often with false promises of employment opportunities.
“The investigation is still ongoing, and no further details can be provided at this stage,” Vailea said.
To combat human trafficking, the Tonga Police are running a public awareness campaign, warning the community about the risks and dangers associated with such crimes.
