Commissioner Janine Donaldson has become the first female territorial commander of The Salvation Army in New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa, marking a historic leadership change in the region.
Donaldson now leads the organisation’s spiritual and governance operations, including its mission in Tonga, where The Salvation Army provides critical support for communities facing economic hardship.
A pōwhiri was held in Wellington to welcome Donaldson to her new role. She reaffirmed The Salvation Army’s commitment to assisting those in need, saying, “People come to us because they need assistance and support—that’s the heartbeat of who we are. We are listening, offering support, and advocating for people and for societal transformation with the love of Jesus.”
Donaldson has served The Salvation Army since 1987, holding leadership roles across New Zealand, Zambia, South Africa, Australia, and the UK.
Her leadership comes at a time when many in Tonga are struggling with rising living costs and the long-term impact of recent natural disasters. She emphasised the importance of working closely with local communities and churches to strengthen support systems.
“We’re better together, and we’re partners,” she said.
Donaldson succeeds Commissioners Mark and Julie Campbell, whose five-year term has ended.
