The first-ever runway lights at Salote Pilolevu Airport were officially switched on during a commissioning ceremony yesterday attended by High Commissioner Brek Batley and Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku. Following the commissioning, the first night-time flight departed Ha’apai at 8 pm last night with the High Commissioner on board.
The TOP$1.8 million project, funded by the Australian Government, represents a huge step forward in the accessibility and development of the Ha’apai islands.
Installed by Tonga Airport Ltd in collaboration with Australian airport lighting company Valupa Pty Ltd, the new lighting system will enable the airport to operate around the clock and will better facilitate critical medical evacuations, boost tourism, and increase overall connectivity for the Ha’apai islands.
“Australia is proud to support Tonga’s aviation sector as a critical enabler of economic development and growth, as well as keeping Tongan families connected,” said High Commissioner Brek Batley during the ceremony.
This event marked a new era for the island’s aviation capabilities, promising greater opportunities for the local community and visitors alike.
