The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) is improving its collaboration with the tourism industry by establishing the first Tonga Tourism Association (TTA) desk within its facilities.
The launch took place during the MoT’s Monday morning prayer this week, attended by TTA President Siosaia Moehau and TTAB Chairlady Mishka Tu’ifua, who thanked the Minister for his leadership.
This initiative, according to a MoT statement, marks a pioneering step for any government ministry to have a dedicated private sector desk staffed by a representative from the private sector.
The Hon. Dr. Viliami Uasike Latu, Minister for Tourism, hailed this development as a positive move toward strengthening public-private dialogue and partnerships. He emphasized the importance of improving coordination and addressing tourism industry concerns effectively.
To support this initiative, the MoT has allocated a $40,000 grant to assist with the TTA’s capacity, secretariat functions, and maintain the new desk.
This desk is expected to streamline industry matters, including those from outer islands, maintaining timely discussions and resolutions. It aligns with ongoing efforts to review the Tonga Strategic Development Framework and develop a new tourism sector plan.
This milestone follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year between the MoT, the Tonga Tourism Authority Board (TTAB), and the TTA.
