Local fishermen in Ma’ufanga are voicing frustration over a recent Ports Authority Tonga (PAT) directive prohibiting fish sales at their usual selling spot at Faua Wharf.
The enforcement aims to alleviate congestion and address hygiene concerns in the area.
Fishermen, accustomed to selling their daily catch at the wharf docking area, have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the sudden displacement. They argue that the ban disrupts their livelihoods and lacks consideration for their economic well-being.
PAT CEO ‘Alo Maileseni stated that the fishermen had been previously informed about the restrictions. He explained that the designated area is reserved for vessels to load and unload cargo and passengers. Maileseni emphasized that unauthorized trading in this zone leads to operational congestion and unsanitary conditions due to fish waste.
The Ports Authority has designated alternative areas within the wharf for fish sales to accommodate the needs of local fishermen. However, the vendors who complained don’t agree.
The enforcement of this ban highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing economic activities with operational efficiency and public health standards at Tonga’s ports.
