Wildfires sweeping across Los Angeles County have claimed the lives of at least five people and left many others injured, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
The Eaton Fire, which erupted Tuesday evening near Altadena and Pasadena, caused all five fatalities. Fire and police officials reported severe injuries among other victims as the blaze consumed 10,600 acres.
In Pacific Palisades, the Palisades Fire burned through 15,800 acres by Wednesday afternoon with no containment. Thousands were forced to flee as the flames destroyed nearly 1,000 structures, including homes and schools.
Cal Fire warned, “Extreme fire behavior, including short and long-range spotting, continues to challenge firefighting efforts.”
The Hurst Fire in Sylmar scorched 700 acres overnight, driven by powerful winds reaching 160 kph. Authorities attributed the deadly wildfire conditions to dry vegetation, low humidity, and strong winds.
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as more than 4 million residents faced power outages across Southern California.
