Former All Blacks scrum-half Folau Fakatava could represent Tonga in the 2025 Pacific Nations Cup, thanks to World Rugby’s revised eligibility rules.
Born in Nuku’alofa, the 25-year-old was once heralded as Aaron Smith’s successor after his breakout performances for the Magpies in the NPC and the Highlanders in Super Rugby. However, injuries derailed his career, leaving him out of New Zealand’s national team plans since his last All Blacks cap on July 16, 2022.
Fakatava is now eligible to play for Tonga, joining a wave of former All Blacks who have switched allegiances, including Malakai Fekitoa and Vaea Fifita. If called up, his inclusion could significantly bolster the ‘Ikale Tahi’s lineup.
Despite missing out on the All Blacks XV in 2024, Fakatava’s potential remains undeniable. His eligibility offers an opportunity for a fresh chapter in his international career.
With the 2025 Pacific Nations Cup and future World Cups on the horizon, Fakatava’s decision could follow the footsteps of other players rediscovering their roots. Tonga’s rugby ambitions could benefit immensely from his talent and experience as they build towards a competitive international presence.
